IIT JAM Exam Pattern 2021: Marking Scheme, Important Topics and Paper Analysis

IIT JAM is a Computer-based exam and the mode of the language used in the examination is English. On August 12, 2020, IISc Bangalore, along with the IIT JAM brochure, released the JAM 2021 exam pattern. IIT JAM Section Wise Exam Pattern 2021

There are six objective-type exam papers in IIT JAM, i.e., Chemistry (CY), Physics (PH), Mathematics (MA), Geology (GG), Mathematical Statistics (MS), and Biotechnology (BT). The IIT JAM is held for a total time duration of 180 minutes. There will be a total of 60 questions carrying 100 marks.

IIT JAM exam consists of three sections – Section-A, Section-B, and Section-C. There is a negative marking in section A, for each 1-mark questions, 1/3 of the marks will be deducted for a wrong answer, and for all each 2 marks questions, 2/3 marks will be deducted for each incorrect response. However, there is no negative marking in Section B and Section C.

Section AThis section consists of Multiple Choice Based Questions.There are four options for each of the MCQ type questions, out of which only one option is the right answer. Section BThis section consists of MSQ type questions which are similar to MCQ type of questions. In MSQ options are not available, there are often more than 4 options in MSQ type question. In such questions, the number of correct answers can be more than one. If the candidate is successful at choosing all the correct options then he/she would get the full credit for answering the question.But if the candidate can choose only a few of them then they would be partially credited.There will be 10 questions in this section of the paper. All 10 questions will be MCQ type.Each of the 10 questions of this section carries 2 marks each.
Section CThis section is mainly of Numerical Answer Type Questions.The answer to NAT questions is a signed real number, which must be recorded on the monitor using the Virtual numeric keypad.No option will be shown for these types of questionsThere will be 20 questions in this section.The 1st 10 questions will be for 1 mark each and the rest 10 questions for 2 marks each.

Note: Candidates must use the mouse to choose the answer to MCQ style questions. The NAT questions can be answered using the Virtual Numeric Keyboard (the computer keyboard will be disabled).

There is a provision for the use of an online virtual calculator, so applicants need not carry with them a calculator.

Yes, in section A, the negative marking is finished. 1 mark is deducted for any wrong answer. However, there are no negative markings for both the B and C Sections.
