GATE 2021 Exam Pattern (Revised), Exam Schedule & Marking Scheme

GATE Exam Pattern 2021 is decided by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. The GATE Exam will take place through Computer Based Test mode. The question paper will contain 65 questions of MCQ, MSQ and NAT type. The exam will be 3 hours long and negative marking will be done only in the MCQs. The GATE exam 2021 will take place on 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th February 2021. GATE Exam Pattern 2021

  • The GATE exam 2021 will be conducted for 27 branches and it will be conducted through online mode only. Check GATE Syllabus 2021
  • The candidates are given an option to appear for 1 or 2 subjects. But, this option is applicable for some prescribed courses only.
  • This year two new branches are added by the organisers- Humanities & Social Sciences (XH) and Environmental Science & Engineering (ES).
  • Last year the organisers added Bio-medical Engineering (BM) in the syllabus.
  • This year the GATE exam 2021 will take place on 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th February 2021.

GATE Exam Pattern for Various Papers

  • In the question papers AE, BT, AG, CE, BM, CS, CH, EC, IN, EE, ME, MT, MN, PE, TF, PI and XE
    • The Engineering Mathematics will consist of 15% of the total marks.
    • The General Aptitude will consist of 15% of the total marks.
    • The core subjects carry rest of the 70% of the total marks.
  • In the question papers AR, EY, CY, GG, PH, MA, XH, ST and XL.
    • The General Aptitude will consist of 15% of the total marks.
    • The core subjects carry rest of the 85% of the total marks.
  • The General Aptitude will consist of 5 questions of 1 mark and 5 questions of 2 marks.
  • The papers except XE, GG and XL will consist of 25 marks of 1 mark and 30 question 2 marks.

For XH Paper Code

  • General Aptitude: This part carries total 15 marks.
  • Paper A (Compulsory)-Mathematics: This part consists of total 11 questions (7 questions of 1 mark and 4 questions of 2 marks).
  • Any two optional papers of XL (Q to U): This part consists of 7 sections (B to H). From these 7 options the candidate can opt any two options. Each section is worth 35 marks (2 section X 35 marks = 70 marks) and consist of 22 questions (9 questions of 1 mark and 13 questions of 2 marks).
  • XE = 15 + [15+(2*35)] = 100 marks

  • Any two optional papers of XL (Q to U): This part consists of 5 sections (Q to U). From these 5 options the candidate can opt any two options. Each section is worth 30 marks (2 section X 30 marks = 60 marks) and consist of 20 questions (10 questions of 1 mark and 10 questions of 2 marks).
  • XL = 15 + [25+(2*30)] = 100 marks

  • The question will consist of two parts: Part A and Part B.
  • The Part B of the question paper contain 2 sections: Section 1 is Geology and Section 2 is Geophysics.
  • Part A consist of 25 questions of 1 mark each and Part B consist of 30 questions of 2 marks.
  • GG= 15+25+60= 100 marks.
